Founded in 1884 by American missionaries from the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Our culture
As part of our Christian-based approach to education, OJ is dedicated to creating a culture that embraces all of God’s people through a strong emphasis on multiculturalism, anti-discrimination and the promotion of human rights.
Being founded by American missionaries, OJ has always focused on developing students’ English ability. From the school’s founding until 1940, education at OJG was conducted entirely in English. Although classes are now conducted primarily in Japanese, OJ remains committed to promoting English language ability and Global Understanding, through programs such as the International Baccalaureate and the English Course, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.
At OJ, English ability is seen not as a “weapon”, which students can use to promote their own interests, but as something that should be used to help others, by allowing them to understand and communicate with people from different cultures. OJ holds many events and activities to encourage students to develop their English skills and understanding of other cultures, such as Multicultural Day, English Camp and English Speech Contests. OJ offers many exchange programs for students, on the basis that first-hand experience is necessary to truly understand a culture.
Our community
OJ students put the values they have learnt through their Christian education into practice not only within the school but in the wider community as well.
Community events and services include:
- The Flower Service, in which students take bouquets of flowers to local hospitals and welfare facilities
- Performances by the school choir and handbell choir at local hospitals and churches
- Meals delivered to disadvantaged areas by the school’s chapter of the Young Women’s Christian Association.
- Donations collected by students at the School Cultural Festival for Christian-founded facilities supporting those with intellectual disabilities, leprosy and orphans.
Extra-curricular activities
OJ offers more than forty different school clubs across its junior and senior high schools. The sports-based clubs range from traditional Japanese archery to skiing, and artistic sports such as baton, while the cultural clubs give students opportunities to pursue both academic, personal and artistic interests, in a diverse range of clubs including science, environmental awareness, music, tea ceremony and drama. Students are also involved in volunteer organizations such as the Young Women’s Christian Association and Paramu, a local organization that supports people with disabilities.
The whole school activities such as the Cultural Festival, Sports Day and Choral Contest emphasize student involvement and students take responsibility for as many aspects of the organization and execution of the event as possible, with the teachers playing only a supervisory role.
Our students
Through our culture of Christian education and global understanding, OJ students come to understand that each and every person and culture is part of God’s creation and deserving of love and respect. As such, they are interested in learning about the world around them and the challenges facing it, from climate change to discrimination against minority groups such as LGBTQ people. However, OJ students do not just stop at learning, but take action in their local community through school-organized events which promote both social responsibility and teamwork. Further, through extra-curricular activities, students are able to develop their individuality by pursuing their personal interests and talents.
We believe that these factors are why OJ students have gone on to be highly successful in many fields, from stage and screen to law, medicine, and architecture, as well as sports and charity.

Curriculum
Our school follows the Japanese educational system. Students are given the option of taking elective courses either Humanities, Science or the English Track. We also provide the International Baccalaureate programme.
